Given there are several feet of snow on the streets, I'm not sure how realistic that goal is. This is the latest t-shirt in the window at a store on Wells I fondly refer to as "The Bitter Divorcee Store." In case you can't see it, it says "Kate Middleton Stole My Life." Other winners in the window have included "Leave Don't Cheat" and "Hope Over Fear." They also have a wide selection of sequin cowboy hats (as spotted on ladies at the ABBA concert at Ravinia) and lamp shades with feathers. Considering the price of real estate in Old Town, I'm pretty sure that the owner got the property in her divorce settlement after her husband left her for the Specialty's delivery guy from his office. I have yet to venture into the store, but am slowly preparing myself for the day when I must go in to find a gift for Bonds' first place.

I saw this story on the news this morning that some kids at a high school near here (St. Charles North) wore shirts that said "Straight Pride" on the front and had a Bible verse advocating death to gays on the back. The kids argue free speech and the school has done nothing to punish them. It may be allowed under the First Amendment but to me, advocating the death of another person because of how that person was born is pretty despicable.

I'm curious to know what would have happened if the shirts said "White Pride" and the back advocated killing people of color. Or what about "Man Pride" on the front and kill all women on the back? I have a feeling there may have been some actual consequences in those cases as there also should have been in this one.

I was actually thinking about the highbrow/lowbrow aspect yesterday when I was reading Slate's latest Mad Men analysis. I love watching Mad Men and The Wire and reading Philip Roth and Jonathan Safran Foer - but I also can't stop watching Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill and reading every awful (but wonderful) blog from DListed to Perez. Lynette said she suffers from the same affliction. Case in point, she currently has the following items on her desk: One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway, the new Bun B CD, and the last book in the Pretty Little Liars series. HAHA.

I just wanted to share a story my friend recently told me. She's a librarian in a Chicago suburb where she's in charge of the youth programs. She kindheartedly decided to set up an ACT prep program with Kaplan that is free for kids who take it at the library. Along with this she hosts study sessions for the high schoolers.

At a recent session she divided the kids into two groups: one in the silent study room and one in the group study room where working together was allowed. She spent most of her time in the group room and periodically checked in on the quiet room. Partway into the evening, her manager approached and her and asked how the study session was going to which she replied "It's great!" Then he said, "Well, you might want to check on the silent study room because they just turned the lights off and everyone is making out."

She ran into the room and flipped the lights on as a dozen shocked teens jumped apart and screamed. Bless your heart, Lynnie, you just weren't prepared for 16 yr old hormones. Hopefully there won't be any library babies arriving next June...

A while back, I posted about how people often tell me that I look familiar or they think we've met before when there is no chance we have. I also don't look like any particular celebrity, so I came to the conclusion that I must just have enough common features as a lot of other people. Well, last night I got a message from two of my Aussie friends, Roger and Stephen, who said they went out to a pub and thought I'd moved to Melbourne and joined a band (sadly I haven't). Take a look at the photos - I think there is quite a bit of a resemblance. Funny huh?

I read the Slate reviews and comments religiously every Monday morning after the new Mad Men episodes, but I've never gotten in on the commenting. Until today. I have had enough with Dr. Faye:

"I'm increasingly frustrated by Dr. Faye's behavior - she started out so strong only to throw herself at Don in the back of a cab after one dinner date. Now she's crying about how he is testing her mothering abilities? I really don't think that's what Don was doing. Dr. Faye seems to be giving herself a little bit more credit than is due - is she already assuming that Don wants to marry her? I think that Don just couldn't cope with Sally's tantrum and looked to a woman to help him. I really liked Dr. Faye at the beginning of the season and now I'm worried she's going to turn into another Miss Farrell (UGH)."

And I got a reply comment (someone else in agreement - yes!) UPDATE: Make that 2 replies!

I came across a very interesting comment re: Faye as well: the commenter claims that "Faye Miller" is the name that Marilyn Monroe used to check herself into psych facilities so they think the writers may be setting up Faye for an interesting turn. I have to think this commenter's onto something - Faye just seems unstable.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock will star as Oscar's parents in the movie adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's book. I liked EL&IC a lot - just not as much as Everything is Illuminated. Definitely excited to see what comes of this, though. In the book, Oscar is a 9 year old boy whose father was killed in the World Trade Center. He goes on a mission through Manhattan to find the lock that belongs to a key his father left behind. One of my favorite elements of Everything is Illuminated was the way Safran Foer worked symbolism into the characters' narration - literally into the way they spoke (in broken English, in modern slang). That was also a part of EL&IC, but for me the more interesting part was to read about September 11th from the perspective of a kid living in New York.

Another thing that bodes well for this movie: the directory/producer combo involved was responsible for The Reader and The Hours.
